Opportunities for Giving

Donations that come from CIM Alumni and other individuals, organizations, businesses and foundations are critical to our mission to provide talented students with a professional, world-class education in the art of music.

You can direct your gift to a variety of funds that support CIM. We encourage you to consider making contributions to the following funds:

The Annual Fund

Every gift to the CIM Annual Fund plays an important role in bridging the gap between operating expenses and tuition and endowment revenues, enabling CIM to provide excellent educational resources and scholarships for students.

Your gift to the Annual Fund supports:

  • Students - more than 3,000 talented students have graduated from CIM's accredited degree programs. CIM alumni perform in major orchestras and opera companies and hold prominent teaching positions around the world.

  • Faculty - The best faculty attract the best students - and CIM's faculty are world-class! Our faculty members enjoy international recognition and are sought after as master teachers in their fields. Thirty-eight members of The Cleveland Orchestra are CIM alumni and thirty-nine serve on the CIM faculty.

  • Resources - CIM ensures the success of its students by offering state-of-the-art technology, including a library media center, recording services and electronic music equipment.

  • Education and Outreach Programs - More than 1,600 children and adults receive music instruction at CIM each year. CIM students perform outreach concerts in schools, nursing homes and civic organizations across the region.

  • Concerts and Special Events - Over 500 concerts and events are presented annually by students, faculty and visiting artists; the majority are free and open to the public.

  • Distance Learning - Using high-speed videoconferencing, CIM faculty use music to teach subjects such as math, science and geography to K-12 students across the country. Master classes allow conservatory students in other locations to have access to CIM instructors, and CIM students to study with distinguished artists around the world.

    The Legacy Society

Add your voice to the chorus of support by including your name on the growing roster of Legacy Society members. The Legacy Society has been created to celebrate donors who have included CIM in their financial and estate plans by providing for The Institute through a will bequest, a trust, insurance or life income arrangement. Members of the Legacy Society receive special recognition and invitations to events at which they can mingle with other forward thinking donors.

A planned gift can be designated to support a CIM program that is particularly important to you. You can also create a tangible legacy at CIM be endowing a naming opportunity. Depending on the size of your gift, you may choose to name a room, a program or a fund for yourself or a loved one with a special affinity for music.

A naming opportunity can be a permanent declaration of your commitment to CIM's future success. Please click here for more information, or contact Stephen Sedam, Development Office, at (216) 791-5000, ext. 706 or email shs20 -at- case.edu.

    Endowment Funds

Endowed funds provide a permanent source of income for the needs of the Cleveland Institute of Music. The principal is held in perpetuity, and only the income generated by the fund is used for the fund's designated purpose. Although unrestricted funds are important in maintaining a fiscally healthy institution, income from endowment funds can be designated according to the donor's wishes. An endowed fund may, for example, support student scholarships (see below for more information on endowed scholarships), faculty salaries, or a specific program, and an endowed fund can be named to honor or remember a loved one.

There are two types of endowed scholarships at CIM: Conservatory Scholarships, which benefit degree-seeking students in the Conservatory; and Preparatory Scholarships, which benefit students taking lessons through CIM's Preparatory and Continuing Education Division. A minimum of $10,000 is needed to endow a Conservatory Scholarship, whereas a minimum of $5,000 is needed to endow a Preparatory Scholarship. Additional contributions may be made to an endowed scholarship at any time, through either an outright or a planned gift. Once a scholarship has been endowed, CIM allows the fund to accrue interest for one fiscal year before payout begins.

Welshhans, Assistant Director of Development, at (216) 795-3165; or e-mail him at david.welshhans@case.edu.
